Zika virus ‘spreading explosively
The Zika virus “is now spreading explosively” around the Americas, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said in a press briefing Thursday.
“The level of alarm is extremely high,” she said.
The relatively new mosquito-borne disease is now in “23 countries and territories in the region,” according to Chan. The Zika virus has raised concerns there and elsewhere due to its alarming connection with a neurological disorder, which makes it especially dangerous for pregnant women and their babies.
