Martin Shkreli Leaks Unreleased Wu-Tang Clan Music After Trump Wins
Earlier this year, Martin Shkreli, the former hedge fund manager, pharmaceutical company CEO, and Collect Records associate, initially made headlines for increasing the price of Daraprim, an AIDS drug, from $13.50 a pill to a whopping $750 a pill. Shkreli found himself in the headlines again (purposely this time) after he bought Wu-Tang Clan’s one-of-a-kind album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin for $2 million.
In an interview with The Breakfast Club, Shkreli gave several different reasons for purchasing the album. One reason was to show off. “There’s a lot of things rich guys do to show off,” says Shkreli. “The press thing is a part of it, but it’s also to show your friends, or your last company, like, ‘Hey, f— you, look at me, I got this $2 million album.’ Guys do that all the time.” Then in a slight contradiction, Shkreli said, “The point is, I wanted to show respect for art.”
In any event, Shkreli promised to release the album if Donald Trump became president. Keeping his word, Shkreli has been airing parts of the album following the announcement of Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton. Like many others, Shkreli admits he didn’t expect Trump to win, saying he would have to negotiate terms of a wider release with Wu-Tang.
