Russell Westbrook Secures Triple Double Average For The Season
Russell Westbrook may have fallen short of registering what would be a record-breaking 42nd triple-double of the season but he secured his place as only the second man to average a triple-double for the entire season.
Westbrook rolled into Phoenix already averaging a double-double, with over than 30 points and slightly more than 10 rebounds per game, but was short of double digits in the assists column. With an outlet pass to Victor Oladipo in the third quarter though, he attained his 814th assist through 78 games, pushing his statistical breakdown to 31.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 10.4 assists by game’s end.
Westbrook can technically sit out the final three games on OKC’s schedule and he’d still be the first man to carry a triple-double through the year since Oscar Robertson did it in 1961-62. The MVP hopeful will almost certainly drag his tail out on the court on Sunday v.s. Denver though, as he remains locked in a tie with Robertson with 41 triple-doubles on the season. After Denver the Thunder will stop through Minnesota on Tuesday, before returning to Oklahoma City to finish their season at home, where they’ll play the Nuggets again; giving Russ 3 shots at #42.
